HISTORY

HISTORY OF AŞİYAN
Aşiyan is the house of Tevfik Fikret, the distinguished poet. After moving here in 1906, he fulfilled his ambition to live in a house that views Bosphorus landscape.
The poet built his house at this spot he had loved for so long, by Rumelian Fortress and next to Robert College. He used to visit this most beautiful spot of the Bosphorus just across Göksu frequently to paint and relax with his wife. They used to dream and make plans for the house they would build right there taking into account every single detail including rooms and furnishings.
Aşiyan’s location itself is a clear manifestation of Fikret’s refined taste. As can be seen in the original visuals of Aşiyan exhibited in the gallery, he drafted the architectural plan of the house and got it built among trees over the Fortress and named it “Aşiyan” meaning “Home” in Persian.

Restoration process dwelled mainly on the structural imperfections in the building, maintenance and support of the load bearer system preserving the original form, renewal of all electronic, water and security systems with modern techniques and isolation for external factors that the building might be subjected. All the interventions to the building in terms of structure, was executed in light of the data gathered by archive studies and researches in advance. Aşiyan has embraced the appearance dating back to the years it was first established thanks to rigorous restoration works such as the office in the main hall, the wall paper in the summer room and valuable craftsmanship all along the museum.

The exhibition of the works in the museum is taken seriously with utmost care.

The exhibition of the objects in the museum was conducted with great care. After determining the original places of all objects, rugs, curtains and other accessory to complete the decoration were chosen in accordance with their originals and conformity with originals for exhibition was aimed.
Preparing the objects for maintenance and exhibition is also a comprehensive process. All furniture and rugs were put through conservation and restoration was applied to some paintings for exhibition.
Aşiyan as a home with which Tevfik Fikret realized his dreams was organized in a way to host all its visitors as Tevfik Fikret would at his time.

While visiting the museum, you will feel as if Tevfik Fikret is meeting you at the door. The inspirational sitting room as it is remembered in the memories of his friends takes back visitors to the past. Ruşen Eşref Ünaydın who wrote her images of the saloon while visiting Tevfik Fikret in a book titled “Tefvik Fikret” states that
“Rengarenk camları gotik mabetleri hatırlatır.
Sade, çiçek girlantlı duvarları, hafif inhinalı tavanı kadim yunan evlerini andırır.
Sedef kakmalı kadife döşeli sediri, kanepeleri bundan yirmi sene evvelki İstanbul zevkini uyandırır.
Cilalı tahtalara serilmiş zarif seccadeler hayalinizi Buhara ya, İran a kaçırır…” .

In the museum you can feel as if the poet is going to come out of a door. Dining room, bedroom, bathroom, laundry room, living room for summer and sitting room will take you back to a century ago.
As it is a house museum, Aşiyan has a different texture and presentation. It represents the house and works of an important man of letters. Additionally, since it is also a museum of literature, it is a very interesting museum in its own field.

Aşiyan Museum can now compete with and have a more distinguished position among its counterparts in the world after the latest restoration and new exhibition. We also believe that the new exhibition of the museum can be regarded as an example among its counterparts and has the importance to take the future museums a step further. New museums are necessary not to forget our old values and prove that these values can contribute a lot to future generations.

You can visit one of the important intellectual figures and artists of our country and other letter of men of his period in Aşiyan Museum and see a rich piece of our cultural heritage.
Aşiyan is worth seeing with the many important works it hosts and its bedroom which has a window known as the most beautiful one opening to the Bosphorus.
